About the Artist Sonja
I'm Sonja, a contemporary Mediterranean-inspired landscape painter, shaped by my travels through Italy and the Mediterranean region.
Growing up bilingual and between two cultures, I’ve always been curious to explore the world and embrace new experiences. My artistic practice and passion for the Mediterranean were shaped by an early travel dream: visiting Rome and seeing the Colosseum. This vision became the starting point of my creative journey. At eighteen, I started studying architecture, and at twenty-three, during the semester break, I set off to the Eternal City on a ten-day Rome itinerary. It was an unforgettable experience that left a lasting mark on my work.
A year later, I embarked on my first solo trip to Italy: I visited Florence and completely fell in love with the capital of Tuscany. I returned there several times to paint in the streets, meeting fellow travellers and connecting with Italy’s cultural heritage. Along the way, I discovered Florence’s hidden gems, which became a key inspiration for my work. The experience inspired me to expand my artistic practice. Today, I tell my travel stories through landscape paintings, shaped by Mediterranean travel and my journeys through Italy, which I document in my Mediterranean travel blog.

My Artist Statement
My Mediterranean landscape paintings capture moments from my travels in Italy and the Mediterranean. Highlighting the essence of each place I visit, they explore themes of home, belonging, freedom, and identity — themes that have interested me due to my bilingual upbringing.
In my work, I express a deep connection to the Mediterranean region that feels more like a place within me than a travel destination. This connection, which feels rich and deeply true, is reflected in my painting style, shaped by precise, evocative detail and fluid, soft brushwork. I aim to understand a place in depth, gently dissolving the edges between form and atmosphere, time and space, and reaching a state of flow that allows me to uncover new perspectives on the world and on myself. Through my creative process, I transform art into travel, and travel into art — much like a journey unfolding in real life.
