Female Artist in Italy - My Journey

I'm Sonja, a visual artist with a background in interior design who captures the warmth and beauty of Mediterranean landscapes through calming, highly detailed oil paintings.

A few years ago, when I was still at school, I dreamed of visiting the Colosseum during my Latin lessons. I grew up in Germany as the child of Polish parents, developing a deep passion for culture and heritage, yet travelling – especially to Italy – seemed out of reach for a long time. So, I found other ways to connect with my favourite country: I started learning Italian, drew its cultural landmarks, and during a school exchange, had my first encounter with Italy on the beaches of Sardinia. I could feel that there was so much more to explore in Italy, and I knew I had to make my way to Rome to see the Colosseum.

I began studying architecture in Düsseldorf, Germany, where architectural history quickly became my favorite subject. I delved into the structures and materials of iconic buildings like the Pantheon in Rome, the Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, and even had the opportunity to visit the Venice Architecture Biennale with my university group. Then, during a semester break, the opportunity to visit Rome finally came. When I stepped into the Roman capital, there was a strange sense of familiarity and warmth. It was as though I remembered something I had forgotten long ago, uncovering a piece of my own history amidst the ancient ruins.

Things truly began to shift during my Master’s degree in Interior Architecture in 2024. I took my passion for Italy to the next level, feeling called to travel to Florence as a solo traveller. Only paintings could ever begin to describe how deeply this experience moved me. To this day, the Tuscan capital feels like a soulmate, constantly inspiring me and pushing me to grow as an artist. In 2025, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Interior Architecture, supported by a scholarship for my commitment to preserving historical monuments throughout my studies. Since then, I’ve continued to tell the story of my travels in Italy through my Mediterranean artworks.

Artist Statement

As an artist inspired by Italy, my landscape paintings are like entries in a travel journal. Every time I paint, I have quiet conversations with my subject, expressing my feelings through brushes and oil paint. My Mediterranean art reflects the questions that have stayed with me throughout my multicultural upbringing: Where does my soul feel at home? Where do I truly belong? Which language does my heart speak? Travel often sparks these reflections, blending art and adventure into a symbiosis that feels like a dance: the world shows me something, and my mind responds with an image.

My paintings are filled with symbols and metaphors drawn from Italy and the Mediterranean: bridges, churches, ruins and temples. My background in interior architecture allows me to understand the deeper essence of these structures, going beyond surface-level appearances. This knowledge helps me bring clarity to my painting motifs, almost like a process of uncovering and refining what lies beneath. Each artwork tells its own story, though the message may not always be immediately clear. This is intentional. These stories are meant to be discovered, felt, and experienced, much like the unfolding of a real travel adventure.

Italian Artworks that Transform your Space

If my landscape paintings resonate with you, this is the moment to take the next step: to choose a beautiful piece of art that speaks to you and bring the warmth and calm of the Mediterranean into your space. With my background in interior design, I understand that our surroundings shape how we feel, think, and move through the day. A functional environment may serve its purpose, but a beautiful one truly embraces you. This is where my paintings come in: They inspire and support you with energy that reflects something authentic about who you are.
