Mediterranean Art — Meet the Artist Behind the Artwork

Ciao, I’m Sonja, a visual artist based in Europe. Through my Mediterranean-themed work, I share moments from my travels and guide viewers to experience a world where dreams and reality coexist.

Growing up in Germany as the child of Polish parents, I developed a deep passion for culture, art, and travel. I’ve always dreamed of seeing the Colosseum, and when I visited Rome for the first time in March 2023, it turned into an awe-inspiring experience that cemented Italy as my favourite country and a lasting source of inspiration. Since then, my travels in Italy have continued, including a solo trip to Florence in 2024. Tuscany left an unforgettable mark on me, and to this day, Florence feels like a soulmate, constantly inspiring me and shaping my growth as an artist.

In 2025, I graduated with a Master’s degree in Interior Architecture, supported by a scholarship for my commitment to preserving historical monuments. Since then, I’ve continued to tell the story of my travels in Italy through my Mediterranean-themed artworks.

Artist Statement for Mediterranean Art

Through my Mediterranean artworks, I share moments from my travels and guide viewers to experience a world where dreams and reality coexist. Travelling—especially solo—has always been a dream of mine, providing me with a sense of inner freedom and peace. It transports me into a different state of mind, which I express through my painting style: brushstrokes are blended yet full of detail, playing with the tension of something that feels real but remains just out of reach.

More than clarifying my own feelings and thoughts, the in-between space allows me to reflect on themes that have followed me throughout my life due to my multicultural upbringing, such as home, belonging, and identity. Each artwork tells its own story, and these stories are meant to be discovered, felt, and experienced. In doing so, they become part of the viewer’s personal journey, much like the unfolding of a real travel adventure.
